Cleanaway Solid Waste (Cleanaway) engaged Senversa for the Design for the Southern Expansion Cell 1, a Landfill BPEM (EPA Publication 788.3) and Licensing Guidelines (EPA Publication 1323.3) compliant design for Type 2 Landfills. The cell is located in a former quarry and is the first of a series of cells in the southern portion of the site, which is assisting in providing an environmentally sustainable location for Melbourne’s waste.

The cell Design included an assessment of the long-term historical groundwater levels that enabled Cleanaway to adjust the cell floor level as required, while complying with the landfill separation requirements to the groundwater in line with the EPA guidelines. During the design process, the Subgrade levels were adjusted in a cost-effective way that did not compromise the airspace capacity of the cell and avoided significant filling works to be required. Additionally, the Senversa design team provided an innovative solution that improved the lining system of the Leachate Collection System of the slopes of the cell, and further reduced the risk of landfill gas emissions.

Senversa has also provided Environmental Auditing, Construction Quality Assurance Inspection and Geotechnical Inspection and Testing Authority services for the construction of multiple caps and cells at the same site. Due to our client’s time pressures regarding operational cells reaching airspace capacity, Senversa has on multiple occasions been able to submit both the as-built construction report and Environmental Auditor report to the EPA within only a few days of completion of construction activities.
