Marine & Freshwater

Evidence‑based solutions for marine environmental stewardship

We combine deep expertise in marine ecology with advanced sediment and water quality monitoring to deliver robust solutions for coastal, nearshore and offshore environments. Our team specialises in managing complex projects, supporting regulatory compliance and protecting sensitive marine ecosystems.

Senversa’s environmental scientists, planners and engineers provide integrated services spanning strategic planning, investigation, assessment, design advice and peer review. Our Subject Matter Experts are highly regarded for their scientific rigour and commitment to delivering clear, defensible technical advice and pragmatic, fit-for-purpose solutions.

With strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks, we work collaboratively with regulators and stakeholders from the earliest stages of assessment to streamline approvals and deliver effective impact mitigation and monitoring across all phases of marine and coastal projects.

Key services

Water and sediment quality investigations
  • Documenting existing baseline conditions
  • Characterising the spatial and temporal extent of contamination to assess risks to ecological receptors
  • Depth profiling to confirm pathway completeness
  • Dredging spoil characterisation

Contaminant discharge and seepage mapping: We assess groundwater and surface water discharge pathways to ecological receptors to:
  • Confirm pathway completeness
  • Assess receptor exposure to contaminants
  • Characterise the spatial and temporal extent of contamination
  • Identify groundwater seepage using indicators such as electrical conductivity or contaminants of interest
Biota tissue sampling: We assess the accumulation of contaminants in biota to inform robust ecological and human health risk assessments. Our biota tissue sampling programs are underpinned by a strong scientific rationale for species selection, ensuring results are meaningful, defensible and directly relevant to risk-based decision-making by proponents and regulators.

Studies to support statutory approvals:
  • Opportunities and constraints assessments
  • Baseline studies (water, sediment, ecology)
  • Impact assessments
Development and implementation of management plans
  • Environmental management plans
  • Site management plans
  • Site-specific trigger values
Quantitative ecological impact assessment: We undertake Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) to quantify potential impacts on ecosystems and ecosystem components. EcIA requires statistically robust survey designs capable of detecting meaningful ecological change and is frequently used as a line of evidence supporting Ecological Risk Assessments.

Eco-design advice: We provide design advice to improve habitat value and reduce the environmental impacts of marine infrastructure.
