Global automotive business environmental management system

Overview

Senversa has provided long-term environmental management system (EMS) support to the Australian operations of a global automotive business, helping the organisation strengthen environmental governance, maintain compliance, and embed sustainability initiatives across its national operations.

Our work has included redevelopment and rollout of a practical, scalable EMS aligned with ISO 14001:2015, supported by ongoing internal audits, compliance reviews, and strategic advisory services.

Challenge

The organisation had an existing EMS designed primarily to manage the environmental performance and compliance of its manufacturing operations. After manufacturing ceased, its EMS needs changed. The organisation required a nationally consistent EMS that could operate effectively across diverse operations and activities with varying levels of environmental maturity and regulatory exposure.

Key challenges included:

  • Translating ISO 14001 requirements into a practical, user-friendly system for non-specialist site personnel.
  • Alignment with other systems and processes, including health and safety, quality, risk, legal, and procurement.
  • Ensuring consistency and scalability across both certified and non-certified operations.
  • Supporting audit readiness and performance, including external certification and surveillance audits.

Outcome

Our team members were embedded within the client’s Environment Team to provide day-to-day support at national and site level.

We worked across functions to understand current systems and processes, identify opportunities for alignment and integration, remove duplication, and build understanding and buy-in for proposed EMS changes.

Following extensive internal stakeholder engagement and approval, Senversa delivered a scalable, nationally consistent EMS supported by:

  • A comprehensive review and update of environmental risk and obligations registers.
  • Development of clear procedures, tools, and training materials to support site-based teams.
  • Ongoing internal EMS audits and audit support programs, aligned with ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Integration of decarbonisation and sustainability initiatives into operational processes.

Impact

Senversa continues to act as a trusted long-term advisor, supporting system evolution and ongoing environmental performance improvement.
Our team has helped the client to:
  • Strengthen environmental compliance and risk management across national operations.
  • Improve consistency, usability, and awareness of EMS processes at site level.
  • Enable ongoing certification to ISO 14001 with strong audit performance.
  • Embed a culture of continuous improvement and environmental accountability.
