Annual landfill monitoring review

Overview

Senversa was engaged by a manufacturing company to undertake its annual landfill monitoring review. The review was conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) Licence and the Groundwater Quality Management Plan (GQMP), and focused on the landfill monitoring network, excluding other areas of the site.

Scope

The scope of work included a comprehensive review of compliance documentation, site-specific reports, and assessment of monitoring results for groundwater, surface water, leachate, landfill gas (LFG), and monthly inspections. Senversa evaluated compliance with the GQMP and Landfill Risk Management and Monitoring Programme (LRMMP), assessed historical and current monitoring data, and compiled and updated leachate extraction and quality data to evaluate the effectiveness of leachate management. The review also included progress against recommendations from the most recent Landfill Operations Audit.

The landfill comprises three cells: the Old Landfill (unlined, closed), Centre West Extension (active, lined, with ongoing capping and leachate/LFG management), and Western Extension (closed, lined, capped). The monitoring network consists of 30 groundwater bores, six leachate bores, 24 LFG bores, and one surface water location. Monitoring was conducted in accordance with the GQMP, with groundwater, leachate, and surface water sampled for a comprehensive suite of field and laboratory parameters, and LFG monitored quarterly.

Senversa’s methodology included, data validation, trend analysis (including Mann-Kendall statistical assessment) for contaminants of potential concern (COPCs) and annual reporting. The review also addressed QA/QC procedures, data usability, and compliance with EPA action levels for LFG and leachate. Monthly site inspections were reviewed for operational and environmental compliance, and recommendations from the EPA auditor were tracked for implementation.

Outcome

Senversa delivered a detailed technical report summarising the physical setting, monitoring results, compliance status, and recommendations for ongoing management and improvement of the landfill’s environmental performance.
